  • Wood photodegradation and biodeterioration mechanism to enhance the production of wood plastic composites with improved weathering performance.
    • Effect of extractives and lignin on discoloration of wood and wood plastic composites during weathering.
    • Mechanism of chemical changes during wood and wood plastic composites weathering.
    • Connectivity between chemical and color, chemical and mechanical properties changes during wood plastic composites weathering.
    • Use of Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetery (DSC), Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA), Pyrolysis Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry (Py-GC-MS), Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC), UV-Spectrophotometer, Colorimeter, optical microscopes as tools in wood science research
  • Engineered wood-based composites: wood plastics composites and cement-bonded boards
  • Wood properties and utilization
  • Wood and wood-based products preservation.

Current Research

  • Understanding the chemistry of wood plastic composites (WPC) weathering and producing WPC with improved weathering performance using FTIR, TGA, DSC, DMA, Pyrolysis GC-MS, GC-MS, HPLC, GPC, UV-Spectrophotometer, Colorimeter, and optical microscopes.

Awards

  • Grants from Office of Naval Research, United States of America for sponsoring project on Wood Plastic Composites with Improved Weathering performance (PhD degree program). 2004-2006.
